The Benefits of Merino Wool
There are many benefits of merino wool. 100% pure merino wool is truly nature’s wonder fibre. No synthetic fabric will ever match the look, feel and performance of Merino. Some of the purest merino wool in the world is grown right here in the mountains of New Zealand! Merino wool comes from the fleece of Merino sheep, a breed of sheep famous for its soft, fine wool. They were first bought to New Zealand from Australia in the 1800’s. It is a 100% natural fibre grown in an alpine environment in the South Island of New Zealand.
Merino sheep graze free range on grass for 12 months of the year resulting in great wool growth. Due to this they only head down off the mountain once a year in Spring to be shorn. Afterwards, they head back up into the mountains to grow some more wool. The sheep have to endure a range of extreme climates from snow and freezing conditions in the Winter to hot dry Summers and their wool has evolved over centuries to enable them to handle those extremes. Their coat always adapts to these changing conditions. Keeping them warm in the Winter and allowing them to breath in the Summer to keep them cool.
Unique to only merino
Is its ability to regulate body temperature, absorbing and releasing moisture. It acts similarly when the fibre is on the sheep’s back for example it cools your baby when hot and warms them when cold. Creating a perfect microclimate around your child’s body. Merino protects your baby from extremes as it actively controls body temperature unlike synthetic fibres. As a result, your Sweet Cheeks Merino clothing feels silky soft, is machine washable, non-itch, resists odour, dries quickly, is exceptionally breathable, and regulates temperature to keep kids at an ideal temperature in all climates and for every possible type of adventure.
There are many benefits of merino wool – the following are some of the well know features:
Breathable & Regulates Heat
Being naturally breathable the fine fibres trap small air pockets between the fibres, it is this which helps to regulate heat and moisture flow to and from your body, protecting the body’s microclimate in changing conditions. For instance Merino can hold up to 30% of its weight in moisture before it begins to feel damp to the touch.
Merino is self extinguishing meaning in the event of a fire it won’t melt or stick to skin, it puts itself out if exposed to heat or flame.
Merino fibre is a great protector of potentially harmful UV radiation.
Our super fine New Zealand knit merino is typically 19 micron – in comparison a human hair is 50 microns. Due to the fineness of the wool it has natural elastic properties meaning it is very stretchy and has a silky soft feel making it lovely to put against delicate skin. It stretches with your child’s movements yet always retaining its original shape. This makes it so comfortable to wear and non itchy. There are many studies linking merino with lowering skin allergies.
Merino fibres are very fine resulting in a very lightweight fabric. This provides extreme warmth to weight ratio. Being lightweight it is super soft and comfortable against young sensitive skin. Sweet Cheeks Merino uses an 18.5 micron merino knit therefore the merino is super soft and comfortable.
Merino fabric is odour resistant, so it doesn’t need to be washed as often as other fabrics. Simply hanging them out to air will suffice.
Merino fibres are strong and long thus enabling a durable fabric that is less likely to pill, and has excellent drape and wrinkle recovery and the garments are gentle machine washable. However you must use wool detergent and do not soak or bleach or holes will develop in the garments. All our products are machine washable on gentle cycle or wool cycle. Tumble dry on cool setting. Do not soak or bleach as this may result in holes in the fabric. • Machine washable • Do Not Soak or Bleach Click here to view our Merino care instructions
